The Challenge

In August 2021, On Broadway, Inc. launched its inaugural Mural & Busker Festival throughout the Broadway District in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The community event centered on a live art collaboration where ten distinct murals were created while street performers—including musicians, jugglers, and dancers—performed for the public. The creative challenge for the exterior site at 128 N Broadway was to design a public artwork that meaningfully celebrated Green Bay's local landscape while engaging community members in a dynamic, interactive experience.

The Strategic Approach
First conceived during a Design Studio course at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD), the strategic approach merged traditional painted mural techniques with digital interactivity. Rather than relying on literal depictions of the city, the visual strategy utilized intentional abstraction to represent the local environment. To evoke a clear sense of familiarity and connection, the design subtly implied the concept of "Home" by grounding the abstract vertical elements with recognizable neighborhood silhouettes along the horizon line.

Key Design Features
Abstract Environmental Elements: The physical mural features intentionally abstract vertical lines that are crafted to represent trees and their corresponding shadows.
Symbolic Horizon Line: The theme of "Home" is subtly implied through silhouettes of neighborhood houses along the horizon, symbolizing the many tree-filled neighborhoods found throughout Green Bay.
Augmented Reality (AR) Integration: To create an interactive digital layer, the painted artwork is paired with an Augmented Reality scene featuring animated woodland creatures that dwell within Green Bay's neighborhoods.
Live Art Collaboration: The physical painting process was executed on-site as part of a live public collaboration alongside performing musicians, jugglers, and dancers during the festival.

The Result
The completed artwork at 128 N Broadway successfully served as one of ten feature installations created during On Broadway, Inc.'s first Mural & Busker Festival. By pairing abstract painted symbolism with digital Augmented Reality, the project delivered a fun, light-hearted, and engaging public art experience that celebrates our community.
